About me

I’m Hazel Rowland, a professional editor, proofreader, and musicologist.

I am obsessed with clear and compelling writing.

I received my BA in Music from the University of Oxford (first-class), my MMus in musicology from the University of Edinburgh (distinction), and my PhD in musicology from Durham University. You can read my PhD thesis here.

I have extensive experience in publishing, academic writing and teaching, journalism, and musical manuscript editing.

I am a fluent German speaker. Since 2021, I’ve lived in Tübingen, a small university town in the southwest of Germany.

My approach

I provide honest and empathetic feedback that aims to make your writing as clear, compelling, and comprehensible as possible.

My editing style is respectful of your voice. I want to help you to authentically convey your ideas to real readers (not just AI machines).

I am adaptable and flexible. Whether via email, video call, or with specific software, I will work in a way to suit you.

I aim to perfect your text as much as possible without exhausting you with endless feedback rounds and rewrites.

As a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing (CIEP), I abide by its Professional Practice Code. This means I follow CIEP’s standards of good editorial practice to ensure editorial excellence.
